Scotch & Soda

With 5 star reviews, direct from the Edinburgh Festival, Melbourne’s SummerSalt Outdoor Arts Festival and on the way to London, Company 2 and The Crusty Suitcase Band (the stellar team behind the 2012 Adelaide Fringe hit sell out Cantina) bring you, Scotch and Soda.

Scotch and Soda can be described as Australia’s finest blend of gypsy music, circus and dance and is hitting the Aurora Spiegeltent in the Garden of Unearthly Delights from February 18 – March 8.

Imagine a dusty bar with a rowdy mob of misfits. You are invited to enjoy a whisky-soaked evening of raucous circus, dance and music. Invoking the meeting of early military brass bands and travelling gypsys in a rowdy whiskey joint, Scotch and Soda steals you away to a grimy vaudeville lair filled with old world charm, broken hearts and buried memories.

Get spectacularly messy this fringe with the finest combination of gravity defying acrobats and genre bent musicians; five of Australia’s most respected circus performers (Chelsea McGuffin, David Carberry, Daniel Crisp, Kate Munz and Mozes ) join forces, the brainchild of two of Sydney’s finest musos; percussion maverick Ben Walsh  and jazz legend Matt Ottington . The Crusty Suitcase Band  is a heady cook-up of horns, drums and old-school instrumentation and some big brass gypsy-hop/funk fusion.

Together the artists mash, collide and explode their superb talents into each other’s arms and hearts. Director and performer Chelsea McGuffin  enjoys her work for the potential it offers to extend circus as a theatrical form:

“I like to make shows with a strong sense of narrative, but one that allows the audience to layer their own feelings on to what they’re watching.” says McGuffin.

Music from The Crusty Suitcase Band drives the action in Scotch and Soda, working with and against the physical and circus prowess of Company 2 acrobats. This is a show with a real kick to it. Be amazed as circus, theatre and spectacular music are shaken and stirred to serve audiences a marvellous cocktail of physical feats and live beats.

Scotch and Soda plays at the Aurora Spiegeltent, Garden of Unearthly Delights from February 18 – March 8.
