Carrick Hill unveils new grand entrance

Visitors to Carrick Hill will notice a new gated entrance to the historic property at Springfield, as the property undergoes major refurbishments.

In a throwback to its iconic history, Carrick Hill has changed its entranceway…

Visitors to Carrick Hill may note there is a new gated entrance to the historic property at Springfield. Now located 90 metres further north from the old entrance, the new oak lined Queens Way entrance is a beautiful way to enter the 40-hectare property.

‘This is the original entry drive to Carrick Hill,‘ said Carrick Hill Director, Susan McCormack. ‘It is also the route travelled by Queen Elizabeth 11 when she opened Carrick Hill to the public in 1986 and is in preparation for our new multi-purpose pavilion which will provide enriched visitor services including an impressive function area, Information Centre and café.’

Each tree along Queens Way has been donated by businesses and people with a connection to Carrick Hill, leaving a lasting legacy to the estate. The noble oak (Quercus cerris), commonly known as Turkey oak, has been selected as it is especially hardy, enabling it to flourish in the South Australian climate.

It comes as Carrick Hill undertakes major renovations, which were announced in October last year.

The project will deliver a multi-purpose pavilion to provide improved visitor services and amenities for international, national and local patrons. Located in an elevated position next to the existing visitor car park, the contemporary building will have a lift to improve accessibility, and will capture views to the west and north, including the original Basket Range sandstone manor house, across the city, out to the sea.

Minster for Arts Andrea Michaels said, at the time, that she was delighted to support the expansion of Carrick Hill.

“The social history of the property is significant – once home to Ursula and Bill Hayward – founder of the Adelaide Christmas Pageant.

“We look forward to building work commencing on this fantastic new pavilion space, and once completed, welcoming back the many Carrick Hill supporters, as well as first-time visitors drawn by this new development.”

The full project is scheduled for completion in mid-2023. For more information on the Adelaide City Deal visit: infrastructure.gov.au.
