CBD cafe Luna launches, with future wine bar plans

A former Playford Hotel pastry chef and Bibliotheca owner are teaming up for this bright new Pulteney Street venue.

A light, bright new cafe called Luna has opened in Adelaide’s CBD on Pulteney Street, created by long time friends Olga Baranova and Marina Tazhdynova.

Both women have a solid background in hospitality, with Olga previously working as a pastry chef for the Playford hotel, and Marina being one of the owners at Gresham Street Bar Bibliotheca.

The duo are rather planning on doing the classics really well, with a few twists and a bunch of creativity.

With Olga’s pastry background you can expect a range of indulgent pastries which will be made on site, which will draw from her experience and knowledge of what people love most.

If you’re after something more substantial in the mornings, they’ll be all about avocado on rye bread and big breakfasts, focusing on a menu that changes seasonally. Our personal favourite was the smoked salmon breakfast, which seeded mustard, dill, radish and creme fresh.

The business partners have been talking about opening a cafe for some time and are excited that their dream has become a reality.

“It was about two years that we’ve been wanting to get into the morning trade, and because Olga is a pastry chef, she wanted to have something that was her own because she has amazing ideas,” said Marina.

While Marina has previously worked nights at Biblotheca and formerly Red October, she was keen to get into the scene.

The pair found their ideal venue on Pulteney street, and loved it because of the small and cosy space. They believe it will be the perfect spot to welcome people in the morning, which Marina is looking forward to.

“Morning trade is very different from the night trade but when you make people’s day good first thing in the morning when they wake up, it gives you different feelings and satisfaction straight away,” said Marina.

While the venue has opened initially as a cafe, it appears old habits die hard for Marina, as the duo have now applied for a liquor licence. The plan is for the cafe to transform into a wine bar by night, with an extensive wine list and small plates.

Luna is located at 449a Pulteney Street, Adelaide 5000.
