The award-winning comedy duo Sammy J & Randy have released their first album. It’s a live recording of their current touring show which local audiences can see at this year’s Adelaide Fringe.
Sammy J & Randy’s Difficult First Album is both the name of the CD and the show, recorded live in Brisbane and featuring 19 tracks; a combination of song and banter.
Puppetry has long surpassed the restriction of being just children’s entertainment and this charming duo, a human and a purple puppet, create belly-laughs galore with their witty song lyrics, storytelling and the unexpected expletives pocketed throughout the show.
They’re accompanied by keyboard as they present all original numbers, working their way through the fictional Encyclopaedia of Comedic Principles. Through the course of the show they discuss and sing about aspects of comedy, challenging each other to a metaphor-off and puns for fun. They compete for the most romantic love song, bemoan the Census, unveil secrets, and much more.
While there is the occasional laugh that requires a visual, this live recording stands on its own. The snappy dialogue extends into the song lyrics with the duo bouncing off each other, disagreeing with or acceding to one other as naturally as an expert ad lib. The pace ebbs and flows nicely, with a fine blend of upbeat and slower moments, while the capture of the audience response adds enormously to the vibe of the recording.
