Celeb cooking demo pop-up hits Rundle Mall this weekend

Callum Hann and Themis Chryssidis from Spout Cooking School return for a second year to hold their wildly popular Urban Kitchen cooking demonstrations.

Salmon ceviche and mettwurst tacos will be part of a South Australian foodie showcase set to tantalise shopper tastebuds, as Tasting Australia returns to Rundle Mall this month.

From Friday, 29th April to Sunday, 8th May, Sprout Cooking School founders, Callum Hann and Themis Chryssidis, will return for a second year to hold their wildly popular Urban Kitchen cooking demonstrations.

Adelaide Economic Development Agency’s Rundle Mall Manager, Nicola Smith, says the free demonstrations – held three times a day – will give shoppers a new appreciation for local produce.

“We’re thrilled to have the Urban Kitchen back in Rundle Mall for another year and getting shoppers involved in Tasting Australia,” says Nicola.

“What Callum and Themis can do with food is amazing. The demonstrations will feature products from the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, Fleurieu Peninsula, Limestone Coast and Clare Valley regions, and you can guarantee they’ll have tantalising flavours throughout.”

Shoppers are invited to sample local products from the featured recipes at the Regional Tasting Carts located under the Gawler Place canopy.

Nicola says the chance to purchase additional products will inspire South Australians to make the most of the state’s varied local produce.

“Shoppers can definitely make the most of Rundle Mall after watching the demonstrations, and grab what homewares they need to become masters of their own kitchen,” says Nicola.

Savoury and sweet dishes will feature across each 45-minute session, with recipes changing every second day. Featured dishes are suited to all cooking levels.

A twist on a South American staple arrives on day one with a salmon ceviche with strawberry salad and herb sauce, featuring strawberries from Beerenberg.

German meats are highlighted through mettwurst, white bean and fennel tacos, while haloumi with pan-roasted pumpkin and lentil salad, saffron poached pears with yoghurt mousse and granola, and honey roasted persimmons with cardamom custard are among some of the other dishes to cause a stir.

South Australian businesses to be featured include Beerenberg and Woodside Cheese Wrights (Adelaide Hills), Barossa Valley Cheese Company and Steiny’s Traditional Mettwurst (Barossa Valley), Fleurieu Milk Company and Port Willunga Fine Foods (Fleurieu Peninsula), Pendleton Olive Estate and Fodden (Limestone Coast) and Rohde’s Free Range Eggs and Eldredge Vineyards (Clare Valley).

For the first time in 2022, there will also be an evening food and wine pairing event on Friday, 6th May at 5:30pm featuring Limestone Coast wine.

Urban Kitchen is presented by Rundle Mall and Farquhar and is a free event, but bookings are essential through the Tasting Australia website.
