Celebrate Australia’s native foods at the inaugural Quandong Festival

Right in the heart of the Flinders Ranges, small town Quorn is set for a day filled with delight, celebrating native Australian foods, on August 6.

Right in the heart of the Flinders Ranges, lies the small town of Quorn on Nukunu land, which is set for a day filled with fascination and delight, celebrating regenerative farming and native Australian foods, at the debut event, the Quandong Festival.

The name derives from one of Australia’s most versatile bush foods, the quandong, and although it’s not the fruit’s season, it will certainly be promoted and celebrated on the day.

If this is the first you’re hearing of the tasty quandong, they are small, cherry-like, bright red balls of fruit, which are often stewed to create a mouth-drooling pie filling – and a bonus, it’s extremely good for you!

The festival is beautifully unifying some of SA’s best growers, authors, scientists, chefs and academics, each preparing guests for a jam-packed day, and a perfect chance to discover more on sustainable living and bush foods.

Mayor of the Flinders Ranges Council, Greg Flint says “We want to learn from them how better to market and incorporate these foods into our businesses and community and in turn share the passion that this community has for these native foods.”

The diverse range of activities and experiences that will be on offer, are truly boundless. Although some events within the festival are separately ticketed, there is plenty to explore without having to pay a dime.

Join Mark Tucek, founder of Tucker Bush and author of Bushfood for Beginners, as he offers an introduction on edible plants and how to ID them for cooking. Or, visit the incredible Jess Hodge from Masterchef Australia in a Mystery Box Challenge.

You can ‘Taste all of The Things’ with Local Hero Flinders Gin for $45 a head, hosted by award winning wine writer Nick Ryan. This tasting will not be limited to a lively chat with the winemakers and distillers – it will be an opportunity to taste the best of their delectable drinks.

Don’t hesitate to bring the kids along, in fact it’s very much encouraged. Children are invited to make their own Quandong keyring, participate in card making using natural dyes or seeds and planting workshops await.

We urge you attend the inauguration of this important event, and enrich your knowledge regarding the beautifully historic land in which we live, and meet many extraordinary people flourishing in their fields.

Even though the event is largely free of charge, you will still need to book tickets here! If you need to cancel please let an organiser know so they can be reissued.

When: Saturday 6th Aug 2022, 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
