The cosy coffee shop located in Croydon is celebrating National Latte Day by sharing its story of roasting with milk in mind.

Willow Bend Coffee has gained a loyal customer base over the last three years since its opening and has since been famed for roasting a medium to dark blend.

With 90% of coffee drinkers opting to have their daily coffee with milk (think a latte, piccolo, or cappuccino), Willow Bend Coffee owner and roaster Ben Pankhurst made it his mission to bring a range of coffee blends to the market that tastes both smooth and strong enough to taste through milk.

“Before I opened Willow Bend Coffee, my wife and I would always go out for coffee and nearly every time we felt disappointed by hardly being able to taste the coffee flavour through the milk in our lattes,” said Ben.

“This National Latte Day is special as it’s a reminder to us of our roots, that we will always roast so that the coffee is the shining star in your cup – not the milk – but of course is also beautiful as a black.”

It is not only the roasting techniques that create such a smooth and rich-tasting coffee, but the quality of the beans themselves that make Willow Bend such a favourite for Adelaide coffee drinkers.

“We purchase from two ethically sourced and quality suppliers to create our perfect roasts – Southland Merchants out of Brazil, and Cofinet based in Colombia,” said Ben.

“These beans are handpicked instead of machine-picked which guarantees the beans are not under or overripe, giving them the absolute best flavour when rostered.”.

Ben found that many other roasters were compromising on quality by choosing cheaper and low-grade beans resulting in an ashy taste.

“Whenever coffee comes into Australia it is graded by a body corporate who grade every single coffee out of 100 – 85 to 100 making it a specialty grade coffee which is all we will use here at Willow Bend”, Ben explains.

Willow Bend Coffee now roasts four specialty coffee blends including the House Blend, The GodFather, the Crema Blend and The Matriarch.
