Celebrity Chef Mark Olive to host inaugural Reconciliation South Australia Gala

Mark Olive, partnering with Adelaide Oval’s Executive Chef Philip Pope, has designed a 6-course degustation, showcasing native ingredients.

In 2022, not-for-profit organisation Reconciliation South Australia is proudly celebrating its 20th anniversary. To celebrate, the organisation is hosting the inaugural Reconciliation South Australia Gala at Adelaide Oval on Saturday 29th October.

Celebrity Chef/TV host Mark Olive aka ‘The Black Olive’, has designed a 6-course degustation menu exclusive to the event, using native ingredients in each course. Mark has partnered with Adelaide Oval’s Executive Chef, Philip Pope, to create an inspiring menu which will bring South Australian flavours to the table within an iconic venue. A First Nations cuisine-centric event has not happened on this scale before in South Australia.

Bundjalung man Mark Olive’s passion for fusing native food and culture with contemporary lifestyle cooking has led to an international profile specialising in gourmet Australian Indigenous Cuisine. He created and starred in his own television series “The Outback Café” which can still be seen internationally, as well as hosting on SBS “A Chef’s Line”, “On Country Kitchen”, and has featured on “Good Cooks” and various other cooking, lifestyle and travel shows nationally and globally. In 2022, Mark has appeared on “The Celebrity Apprentice”, “The Cook Up with Adam Liaw” and NITV’s “Big Mob Brekky”.

“I’m a huge admirer of the tireless work done by the Reconciliation South Australia team and can’t wait to come back to amazing Adelaide for their Gala event in October. I’ve been lucky enough to cook in kitchens and countries the world over, but this will be my first-time cooking at a sports arena. I can’t think of anywhere better for this ‘First Nations first’ than the iconic Adelaide Oval…. Bring it on!”, said Mark Olive.

Born and trained in South Australia, Executive Chef of Adelaide Oval, Philip Pope, is uniquely qualified to create bespoke culinary experiences for one of the world’s most iconic venues, situated on Kaurna Land.

On working together with Mark Olive on this special event Philip said, “It is a great opportunity for myself and the Chefs of Adelaide Oval to be able to showcase some of the state’s best local native producers in the Gala menu. We’re looking forward to working with one of Australia’s most creative First Nations Chefs and utilising ingredients sourced from our local native suppliers.”

Reconciliation South Australia are very excited to host an event of this calibre and to do so for the first time within their 20th year as an acknowledgement of all that has been achieved so far. Theatre, film, and television performer Luke Carroll will MC the night, which will also feature live musical entertainment from Papua New Guinea born, Naarm/Melbourne based artist Kaiit, and South Australia’s hottest First Nations rising stars, Marlon X Rulla.  Guests will also have an opportunity to bid on an array of exciting items in a silent auction throughout the night amassing $10,000 of value.

The Gala is a fundraiser aimed towards supporting Reconciliation South Australia’s continued work in promoting reconciliation between First Nations and other Australians, including through education, advocacy, brokering partnerships and showcasing excellence.

Interim Chief Executive Officer of Reconciliation South Australia, Belinda Hallsworth said, “The Gala will be a unique experience bringing people together around food, designed by two incredible Chefs and showcasing South Australian native produce.”

“With immense goodwill in building relationships between the wider community and First Nations peoples, there has never been a more important time to show support, celebrate the work achieved so far and come together to advance the Reconciliation movement. With the Federal Government’s commitment to holding a referendum on First Nation voice, the time to be seen, heard and act is now. Reconciliation South Australia looks forward to the support of government, corporate, not for profit and other partners and communities.”

Tickets for the RECONCILIATION SOUTH AUSTRALIA GALA go on sale at 10am ACST Thursday 1st September until *5pm ACST Friday 14th October 2022 (*unless allocation is exhausted).
