The Oscars may have come and gone, but there’s another star-studded event Adelaide fashionistas can’t afford to miss – the crowning of the 2019 Adelaide Next Top Pet this weekend.
Hosted by Channel 7 presenter Amelia Mulcahy and with a line-up of celebrity judges, the event kicks off at 3pm on Sunday inside the historic Published ArtHouse, a welcome recent addition to the city’s cultural western precinct.
On the judges’ panel are Aussie Dog Guy Ryan Anderson, TV personality Leela Varghese and Couture Love Madness designer Cristina Tridente.
For Ryan, a former Tinder Bachelor of the Year, Sunday’s event will be his last public appearance in Adelaide before moving to Queensland.
A full afternoon and evening of entertainment is planned including a fashion parade starring models from Tanya Powell agency in designer clothing selected from RSPCA South Australia’s Op Shops. Also taking centre stage will be singers Bella Rose and Taylor Pfeiffer. Away from the stage, there will be stalls to browse and prizes to be won.
Now in its third year, RSPCA SA’s Next Top Pet competition is a spinoff from the Next Top Model concept – the main difference being the entrants usually have four legs rather than two.
The contest requires pet owners to show off not only their pets but also their online networking skills as they persuade friends, family and complete strangers to support their bid to be top fund-raisers. A winning strategy is to capture and post very appealing photos of pets.
The top ten fundraisers will have the opportunity to walk the catwalk with their animals and possibly be crowned Adelaide’s Next Top Pet.
Currently in the lead is Alex Arya’s one-year-old English Staffordshire Terrier Arya, followed by Zoe Donaldson and her German Shepherd Archer and Sarah Treadgold with her scene-stealer pup Poh (pictured top).
According to event organiser Kate Jones, the three frontrunners have all raised more than $1000 but anything can happen in the final race to the finish line.
“We hope more people go online and contribute to the entrants’ fundraising campaigns – there’s a great selection of animals to choose from. It’s also not too late to register and have your pet in the running for the title.
“And of-course we’d love to see our supporters this Sunday.
“Entry is free and we’re in for a great afternoon of fun and fashion, so come along and support RSPCA South Australia continue to do what it does best, care for animals in need.”

Head to to nexttoppet.com.au. Sign up, and we recommend you take an Instagram worthy snap of your future star and then post it together with some words explaining why you think your pet deserves the title of Adelaide’s Next Top Pet.
Next, and most importantly, ask your friends, family and colleagues to support your pet’s rise to fame. Share your fundraising page on social media using the hashtag #nexttoppet, or send them an email using one of our email templates.
And it’s always good to kick off your fund-raising campaign by making the first donation yourself! Once you raise your first $20 you’ll receive a pawsonalised pet bandanna – the pawfect accessory for your furry friend to wear on the cat walk (or dog walk) if you are among the top ten fundraisers.
