The Art Gallery of South Australia is no stranger to presenting ground-breaking and challenging exhibitions. The latest in a long line of thought-provoking events is Robert Wilson’s video portrait series.
Robert is a world-renowned creative: an American experimental theatre stage director and playwright who has been described by The New York Times as “[America]’s—or even the world’s—foremost vanguard ‘theatre artist.'” He has also worked as a choreographer, performer, painter, sculptor, video artist, and sound and lighting designer. Quite the resume.
In this exhibition—an Australian premiere and exclusive to Adelaide—Wilson presents imperceptibly slow-moving video portraits of celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Isabella Rossellini, Brad Pitt, Zhang Huan and Robert Downey Jr. Each life-size work is captured in high-definition video and displayed on large monitors to create an arresting ensemble of characters and moods.
Wilson has incorporated a multitude of creative elements into his video portraits. Lighting, costume, make-up, choreography, scenography and sound are ingeniously crafted into the whole exhibition, an exhibition that urges audiences to reconsider the nature of portraiture.
