Today Adelaide celebrities will take part in the first ever Adelaide Central Market Challenge — a brand new culinary combat that combines food knowledge with real hands-on skill.

The competition involves a race around Adelaide’s world-famous market – tasting, testing and preparing some of the best produce in the region.

Adelaide personalities will experience a preview of the new event, before it officially opens to the public as part of the Fringe Festival.

“It’s a cross between Masterchef and orienteering”, explains Event Manager Mark Gleeson. “You’ve got to run around the Market, visit stalls and answer the competition questions within a tight sixty minute timeframe. It’s high intensity and great fun.”

Armed with aprons, maps and an impossible questionnaire, the Market Challenge is a foray into food like no other.

In teams of two, participants will take part in blind tastings, food identification, preparation and presentation, plus answer knowledge-based questions on market produce.

“It’s designed for the young… and the wise”, jokes Gleeson. “You’ll need to bring your running shoes, your aprons and your thinking caps – because you’ll need all three!”

Winners of each Market Challenge round will celebrate by donning the yellow boxing gloves and will feature on an exclusive online Hero Gallery. There are also great prizes up for grabs.

Aside from the Market Challenge, Gleeson also manages The Providore and runs the award-winning Adelaide Market Tours, a major drawcard for international, interstate and local visitors.

Gleeson says,“We’re launching the Market Challenge as part of the Adelaide Fringe Festival, but eventually we want to continue it throughout the year. We know Adelaideans love their food and wine, now they can prove it. It’s game on!”

More information and behind-the-scenes previews are available at their Facebook page.

Tickets for the Market Challenge can be purchased through Fringetix and the Adelaide Fringe website.
