Fill Her Up

Joanne Sutton invites you to look at the world through rosé-filled glasses and the eyes of an unnamed, slightly stumbley heroine.

I don’t know about you, but I have been known to throw back a few glasses of wine, sit somewhat wobbly on a bar stool and attempt to engage the bartender in polite conversation in the hope of achieving a discount on my tab.

This being said, I have never climbed out a window and down a drainpipe to avoid last night’s one night stand. I have never tried to pick anyone up by singing a very intoxicated rendition of Carly Rae Jensen’s Call Me Maybe, and I have never, to my recollection, drank six shots in rapid secession to the accenting tones of a piano.

I have, however, wondered aloud “where is my Ryan Gosling screaming in the rain?”

All of these tales and more are part of the adventure that is Fill Her Up…, a one woman show in this year’s Cabaret Fringe Festival. Joanne Sutton is mesmerising as the unnamed, slightly stumbley heroine. She dives head first in karaoke-inspired renditions of jukebox favourites and some Top 40 hits, and while her performance is of a drunk, needy individual, her shaky and post tequila performance does not completely disguise a good voice.

Sutton uses wit, storytelling, comedy and song to envelop you in her world. She invites you to share a drink and tales of potential love, heartbreak and post-coital escapes. With the assistance of writer and musical director, Luke Jacka, and director Stephen Nicolazzo, Sutton invites you to look at the world through rosé-filled glasses.

Fill Her Up… offered brilliant character work and audience interaction, but left me wanting more because at 35minutes, I barely had time to finish my cocktail before the house lights came up.

It’s a hundred laughs a minute, amazing venue, (once again I found myself at La Boheme), and it will get you back to your car before the price of parking gets too high. A good night out all round.
