Cabaret Fringe Festival Review: Salvation Amy

Salvation Amy

Songs from the bottom of the charity bin. Amy Bodossian presents a night of spoken word and song about the flotsam and jetsam of humanity.

The show started 20 minutes late due to what appeared to be disorganisation, showing a lack of respect for the audience and setting the scene for what was to follow.

The premise for this piece is what can be found in the charity bin at the Salvation Army among the flotsam and jetsam of humanity.  Amy looks at the discarded articles and muses on the history of the clothing and its previous owners. Each tale she starts seems to meander to nothing.  Claiming to suffer from OCD and armed with a bottle of hand sanitiser, Amy stumbles through discarded clothing and lost emotions.

This show has received good reviews on previous showings and there are flashes of that production still there, but the show that I saw was disjointed and lacked any sort of cohesion.

Amy Bodosssian has a nice voice, and she delivers some interesting poetry and has some talent at her disposal, but this show didn’t work.

Her unnamed accompanist provided excellent support, even playing both the piano and the snare drum at the same time. I am at a loss to explain why this show did not work, but the performer seemed distracted and failed to hold the attention of the audience.

In all, after the advertising build-up, it was a disappointing end to the evening.
