Cabaret may be synonymous with music but Adelaide-based Changing Jennifers reset the definition to its broader context with a hearty night of wit and comedy.
This skilled improvisation troupe invites the audience to jot down imaginary story titles before the show begins. They select three and enact short opening scenes from each, before asking the audience to vote on which story they want to see expanded to conclusion. The winning tale then evolves over the course of approximately 45 minutes as performers Phil, Eden, Eugene and Dan improvise the story.
With surprising alacrity, the story evolves with character histories, sub-plots, soap-opera twists and a rounded conclusion that ties everything together. The comedy is thick and fast, and the boys rarely paused as they unveiled their sweeping tale of The Fireman and the Dragon on this particular night.
To develop such detailed storylines with little or no preparation is an extraordinary skill, as is their ability to bounce off each other as smoothly as if they play had been scripted.
With only one performance remaining in this year’s Cabaret Fringe, Changing Jennifers may be the ideal alternative for those not into the musical side of cabaret.
