At 4pm on Monday July 26 1965, Adelaide welcomed a new TV station – SAS 10, later to become SAS 7 after a call sign swap in 1987.

And on Sunday July 26 at 5.30pm – exactly 50 years after the launch of Adelaide’s third commercial station – Channel 7 will celebrate the anniversary with a documentary special, Channel Seven: The First 50 Years.

SAS 10 began broadcasting on July 26 1965 at 4pm. The first program to screen was the locally produced The Bobo Show, featuring Hal Turner as Bobo The Clown and accompanied by Penny Ramsay.

The first commercial on SAS was for Coca Cola. At 6.30pm the news was read by Roger Cardwell, with Gail Spiro presenting the weather (Cardwell returned to the station this month to voice the promo for the special). The first feature film screened on SAS was Sabrina with William Holden!

While it was a modest start for Adelaide’s first independent TV station, 50 years on Channel 7 has become a dominant force in Adelaide television.

Presented by Grant Cameron and produced by SALife presenter Briony Hume, Channel Seven: The First 50 Years is a nostalgic five-decade journey as they share with viewers some of their precious memories – from the Today Show with Noel O’Connor, Warwick Prime and Paul Griffiths to A Touch Of Elegance, Deadly Earnest, Romper Room and Fat Cat.

Plus the big community events like The Birdman Rally, Milk Carton Regatta and the Christmas Appeals.

They open the vault to take a peek at the many other shows produced at SAS – Fat Cat and Friends, Crackerjack, Earlybirds, New Faces, Sportscene, Footy Plus, In Time, Deadly Earnest, Movie Scene and Trax.

For a trip down the memory lane of Channel 7, don’t miss their 50 year special on this Sunday, 26 July.
