Charleston Cherries have announced that they will be open December 17 and 18, offering a remarkable opportunity to experience picking some of Adelaide Hills’ finest cherries.
The orchard has finally let prospective pickers know when they can return to the Charleston area following the slow start to summer, which has deeply impacted the chance for a novel escape to nature.
Merchant cherries are the star of the show and available to pick this weekend, they are renowned for their deep, dark red shade and their sweet taste.
This is likely due to their early ripening of Merchant cherries, which have not been impacted by the delayed sunshine to the same extent as other varietals.
Unlike some orchards, booking is not required at Charleston which means that from 9am to 2pm on Saturday and Sunday, pickers can simply rock up and get stuck in after paying the $6 entry fee.
Better yet, you can pick your own payment too! At a rate of $1 per kilogram, you can surrender your ticket when buying six kilograms of cherries that you’ve picked and receive six dollars off your purchase, with each kilogram priced at $11.
Charleston Cherries are a family-run business, with tonnes of car parking and a relatively flat field which makes it accessible for those seeking the business whilst looking to avoid the incline.
The business have stated that they were set back by the weather, being roughly 2-3 weeks behind schedule, but the silver lining is that January will now have ripe cherries that it otherwise wouldn’t.
Orchards open at 9am and close at 2pm this weekend, with entry officially closing at 1pm for late arrivals, so make sure to rise and shine if you want a cherry special experience.
Required clothing includes long sleeve shirt, full-length pants, closed shoes and hat, along with a trusty water bottle by your side so that you can stay hydrated.
If you are looking to embrace the tart red sheen of fresh fruit, spend a day with a loved one or escape from the city to give yourself a memorable outing, you can keep up with the Charleston Cherries Facebook page or contact them via phone at 0477 404 462.
