Chef Hat-winning CBD restaurant and wine bar announces closure

After two years as a beloved hidden gem on Peel St, Icarus Wine Bar has closed its doors, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional dining and good times.

A beloved Peel St wine bar has said bye for now as they close the doors to their award-winning CBD hidden gem.

Icarus Wine Bar opened in 2023 as a sleek, minimalist bar and restaurant, aiming to stand out amidst the chaos and energy of its surroundings—and it certainly did. During its time in operation, Icarus received two Chef Hat awards in 2024 from the Australian Good Food Guide, placing it in Australia’s top one per cent of restaurants and South Australia’s top 10 eateries.

Known for its natural wines, and menu cooked over charcoal utilising organic produce, Icarus made a name for itself as a staple favourite on Peel St.

Behind the restaurant was co-owner Sam Stoios. Sam comes from a culinary rich background, cheffing across the globe in the South of France. Sam and the team brought these Eastern European and Mediterranean-inspired flavours to the restaurant, showcasing local produce and international techniques.

Sadly now after two great years, the team have shared that it was time to shut the doors.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that our little Icarus has closed its doors,” they shared on Instagram.

“Creating this space was a dream come true, and we are so grateful to all of you who came to try our food, immerse yourselves in this little haven, and share in the events and experiences we poured our hearts into.

“To the faces who made Icarus what it was—our incredible team, our wonderful suppliers, our loyal regulars, and every single person who walked through our doors—we cannot thank you enough. You were the soul of Icarus, and we will forever cherish the smiles, the laughs and sometimes the tears.

“Though Icarus has come to an end, it will always hold a special place in our hearts.”

With a brilliant team behind it, Icarus was a hidden gem—perfect for date-night dinners, drinks, and even a late-night boogie. From DJs spinning vinyl to collaborations with local eateries and businesses, Icarus was a beloved part of the community.

Whatever the team does next, we’re sure they’ll be met with as much love as Icarus was.
