Ask any small business owner and they’ll tell you that going out on your own is no easy feat and no one can attest to this more than Cheffy Chelby’s owner, Michelle Lowe.
Michelle’s journey into restaurant owner has been a rollercoaster of a ride to say the least but despite the odds, Michelle’s beloved burger chain, Cheffy Chelby’s continues to persevere and has just opened its new location in Christie’s Beach.
Residents of Adelaide’s South are probably familiar with Cheffy Chelby’s and the delicious, drippy, drool-inducing burgers that come from behind the counter with the name quickly travelling throughout Adelaide and customers coming from all over just to get a taste for themselves.
A chef by trade, it was the global pandemic in 2020 that pushed Michelle to branch out on her own and what started as a trailer in the carpark at Port Noarlunga soon turned into her very first physical store in the same suburb followed by countless awards including SA’s Best Burger Café in 2020.
Michelle soon opened a second location in the neighbouring suburb of Morphett Vale and with a third location on the horizon, it was looking as though Cheffy Chelby’s would be THE place to eat down South.
But, things took a turn when a structural issue with the roof at the Flagship Port Noarlunga restaurant threw a spanner in the works and it was with a heavy hearth that Michelle announced her first and most popular location would be forced to close at the end of February this year.
As if that wasn’t enough, her plans to open a third shopfront in Aldinga also fell through meaning Michelle had lost two of the three restaurants in as many months. But, Michelle’s emphatic positivity (the exact attitude that saw her win the 2022 Young Achievers Award) helped her to keep going, despite the tough times.
You can expect everything you know and love from the Cheffy Chelby name at the new shop, with delicious burgers, healthy meal options and the fresh, vibrant community spirit that sets Michelle’s venues apart.
Not only does she ensure the highest quality of food, but Michelle also seeks to help others where possible through her restaurants. From the staff she employs to the annual Christmas giving tree campaign and all the other charitable moves in between, a visit to Cheffy Chelby’s not only does wonders for your belly but also for your soul.
