China Southern Airlines announces return to Adelaide

China Southern Airlines is set to resume its direct flights to Adelaide, starting December 12th, with the development expected to boost tourism and trade for South Australia.

The returned flights will bring the total number of international airlines operating direct services to Adelaide to nine. China Southern Airlines, one of China’s largest carriers with a fleet of over 900 aircraft, will operate three flights per week between Guangzhou and Adelaide using a Boeing Dreamliner 787-8, providing an additional 798 seats each week.

“This is another massive win for our state’s tourism and trade sectors, which will see millions of dollars injected into our state year on year,” Premier Peter Malinauskas said.

“Building airline capacity has been a priority for the government from the start, as we work to bring back international visitors in South Australia who are not just here for a holiday, but those ready to invest in businesses, education, and exports.

“I look forward to this December when we welcome China Southern Airlines, and the thousands of visitors on board, back to South Australia.”

The return of China Southern Airlines’ flights marks a revival of a service that began in December 2016 but was suspended in March 2020 due to the global pandemic. It’s projected to generate over $69 million annually and create more than 255 full-time tourism jobs in South Australia.

In 2019, South Australia welcomed 66,000 Chinese visitors, contributing $384 million to the local economy. By the end of March 2024, the Chinese market had rebounded to $145 million – a 131% increase from the previous year.

The direct flights will not only strengthen ties with China but also enhance connections to other important regions, including Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North America.

China Southern Airlines flights will operate every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. The schedule includes departure from Guangzhou at 22:15 and arrival in Adelaide at 09:55 the following day. The return flight will leave Adelaide at 11:30, arriving in Guangzhou at 18:05.
