Chow Town A Hit At Big Day Out

543813_451919034875434_2079864919_nWe all know what the food at music festivals can be like – the greasy, fatty junk food packed with high fructose corn syrup can leave you feeling worse the next day than the 10 vodka Red Bulls you managed to drink. But thanks to Chow Town this year at Big Day Out, festival-goers finally have the chance to experience world renowned bands AND amazing food from local chefs.

Chow Town is the brainchild of Melbourne chefs Ben Milgate & Elvis Abrahanowicz of Porteno/Bodega and features a series of food stalls from local culinary artists in each state.

South Australians in particular love good food so it was great to be able to experience some of what our state has to offer.

Manu Parez from Veggie Velo is fast becoming an icon in Adelaide. The pick of the day was the deluxe Burger with halloumi, grilled pineapple, a quinoa patty with salad and sauce. A well known face around town, watch out for Manu on his green bike at Adelaide events like Gilles Street Markets and Summer Fridays in the East End. veggievelo.blogspot.com.au

Matthew Trim and Aaron Gillespie from The Grace Establishment served up their famous burgers. There’s nothing like a spit roast suckling pig bun with slaw and homemade BBQ sauce and a side of spicy fries on a Summer day! The pig on a spit in particular certainly drew quite a crowd! Head to The Grace on The Parade, Norwood to check out more from these guys. www.thegrace.net.au

Celebrity chef Simon Bryant and Jade Seskis gave vegetarians and vegans something to satisfy their hunger with delicious salt and pepper tofu and vegan or vegetarian Kway Teow. Certainly not a typical festival meal, however the food was a hit with the Adelaide crowd. www.simonbryant.com.au

Sam Worrall-Thompson from Jack Ruby had a long line up for most of the day with their pork belly and slaw burger and a beef cheek, lemongrass and tamarind soft taco.

There’s nothing like a huge BBQ of fried chicken when you’ve been dancing the day away! Julian Rydon from Chicken Baby by The Vendor served up buckets of chicken and Choc-dipped Frozen Bananas w/ Cornflake Crunch, Coconut, Peanuts or Pop Rocks! www.thevendor.com.au

If dessert is more your thing – Quang Nguyen from Devour was the place to go for a sugar hit with Peanut Butter Jelly Panna Cotta and ice cream sandwiches. www.facebook.com/DevourDessertBar

There’s only two more Big Day Outs left so if you’re heading to Melbourne or Perth, make sure you get down to Chow Town!
