Chunky Custard duo take over Seacliff gym to keep fitness legacy alive

From stage lights to gym lights Becky and Blakey’s new Seacliff chapter is all about community, sweat and legacy.

Becky and Blakey, known for their high-energy performances with iconic Adelaide band Chunky Custard have brought their trademark energy to gym life.

The pair recently took over Foster Fitness Seacliff, after founder and trainer Andy Foster passed away.

“It wasn’t exactly a calculated career move. It was a moment of insanity,” Becky laughs. “But honestly, it was for the good of our gym community.”

“It’s certainly a pivot from entertainment,” she says.

“But fitness has always been a big part of my world, and I’m absolutely loving helping people on their fitness journey.”

New owners Blakey and Becky

Foster Fitness is a small, community-driven gym built on heart, sweat and the legacy of one man, Andy Foster.

Andy opened the doors in 2017 and quickly turned the place into a gathering spot where everyone knew each other’s names and post-workout coffees were part of the routine.

“Andy was a brilliant trainer,” Becky says. “This gym was his family. He was just the most inspiring, beautiful man.”

When Andy was diagnosed with cancer, the gym rallied around him.

“People would shop for him, take him food, and message him constantly,” Becky says.

“He was so open about what he was going through, and somehow he stayed optimistic through it all. He was quite magnetic, and even when he was sick, he’d come in and talk about new ideas for the gym.”

Founder and trainer, Andy Foster

After Andy passed away in April 2024, and trainer Tina stepped in to keep things running, managing more than 30 classes a week plus personal training clients. When she decided to move interstate earlier this year, the community faced losing its gym.

“Everyone was so sad,” Becky says. “We were all like, ‘Where are we going to go? What are we going to do?’ So the numpty that put her hand up was me.”

Now renamed Foster Fitness Community Gym, the Seacliff Park space has around 80 members. “It’s the kind of place where everyone rallies around you,” Becky says.

“If someone’s new, or nervous, or hasn’t been in a gym before, everyone makes them feel supported.”

Becky and Blakey both completed their Cert 3 in Fitness before taking over. Together with trainers Ellen and Bruce, they’ve added boxing, stretching, and high-intensity sessions for people short on time.

“We’ve got a wonderful team and we’re sharing classes between the four of us,” Becky says.

“It’s busy, but it’s a labour of love.”

“When you walk in, there’s a little sign that says, ‘I didn’t come this far to only come this far,’” she adds.

“Andy didn’t do all of this for it to stop, and I feel proud that we’ve been able to keep his legacy going.”
