Circus Review: Wunderkammer

Wunderkammer

This modern circus is a fine piece of entertainment with a European and contemporary feel and a touch of the bizarre, performed by world-class artistes.

This performance starts very quietly, a girl with one Hula Hoop. One hoop quickly becomes three, and her control is impressive, but this is not circus? – Then suddenly the other members of the troupe erupt onto the stage and the audience is not sure where to look first! Their talent is remarkable; each of the seven members has great core strength and incredible balance, which they couple with a sense of fun and mischief.  They do strange things with balloons (uninflated), so if you are squeamish about what goes up the nose, don’t watch that bit, although it ends up being very funny.

Nathan Boyle looks strong and solid enough to lift and throw around other troupe members. In fact, so do Gerramy Marsden, Daniel O’Brien, and Duncan West, but the ladies are the real surprise. They do their share of lifting and supporting other members. Jessica Connell, Kimberly Rossi and Brittanne Portelli also draw gasps when they hang from the trapeze in strange unsupported ways, strip in mid-air or squeeze through a small metal ring. This group has all the usual lifts, balances and feats of strength that you would expect, but they do it all with flair! A fun mix of quirky characters, throw in some great trapeze work and a little contortion and you have a great show.

This reviewer is not sure why they are constantly removing their costumes, but when they have such beautifully toned bodies no one is likely to complain and for the most part it is all in the best possible taste. Yaron Lifschitz has put together a fine piece of entertainment with a European and contemporary feel and a touch of the bizarre, performed by world-class artistes. An interesting and edgy mix of sound and lighting by Technical Director Jason Organ enhanced the experience.

The company, which is based in Brisbane, also trains hopeful circus performers. They have more that one performing troupe active simultaneously. Currently they are touring Europe while we enjoy their Australian tour.  This performance is unusual and well worth a look.
