City Of Adelaide Comes Alive For Summer Networking

Party games as icebreakers? No, this is not tinder come to life, it’s modern networking… lordy!

It’s social networking, but as not as you know it.

Park Play – an outdoor social event that uses party games as icebreakers – is amongst the growing list of more than 50 events for this year’s Splash Adelaide event calendar.

Event organiser Nate Overbeeke intends to create a fun and relaxing way for adults to meet new people in a summer festival atmosphere.

To be held in Hindmarsh Square, from 3pm until 7pm on Sunday 27 November, the event is the city’s first of its kind and will offer a range of party games to play including custom giant Jenga which stands at six feet tall.
Amongst the other activities, which will be facilitated by hosts with between six and eight participants at a time, are games including UNO, Cards Against Humanity, bocce, tipping dominoes, kubb and LEGO building challenge.

Attendees can take a break from the game playing and socialising to purchase Italian street food from Signor Arrosticini, as well as coffee and alcohol at the licensed, 18+ event.

“While Adelaide’s food and drinks scene is thriving, it can be hard to walk up to strangers and introduce yourself and start a conversation, without them being shy or shunning you for being too forthcoming – especially between opposite sexes,” said Nate, who studied behavioural sciences as part of his Honours degree in Health Science.
“Every element of the event is designed to encourage creativity and spontaneity, and exploration with both other guests and the games themselves. It’s a social experience wherein adults can rediscover and embrace their playful selves.

“My inspiration came from the Royal Croquet Club. It’s a fantastic event, a great atmosphere, but when you look around most people were only chatting with their friends and everyone was in their little social groups. They would enjoy it even more if they mingled with others.”

Splash Adelaide is an initiative of Adelaide City Council, partnering and co-creating with the community to bring streets and public spaces to life through a series of activations and events. The 2016/17 Splash Adelaide event season runs from now through until April.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese said Splash Adelaide intends to increase the vibrancy and vitality of the city.
“It is all about encouraging creativity and innovation. Splash Adelaide supports great new ideas and adds to the diverse offering in the city,” he said.

“This is the perfect time of the year to run an event in the City of Adelaide. We have an active and engaged community eager to get outside, enjoy the sunshine and explore what’s on offer in the city.”
