City of Adelaide Visual Arts Exhibition Award Winner Exhibiting This Month

Local artist Zoe Woods will showcase her work at the Naturalis: Biotic Symmetry in Glass exhibition at Urban Cow Studio this month – with a little help from Adelaide City Council.

Last year Zoe was awarded the City of Adelaide Visual Arts Exhibition Award at the Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition. Supported by Council, the accolade provides $3,000 in financial assistance towards staging a solo exhibition in the Adelaide CBD.

“The Award is part of our Grants funding program, which assists aspiring artists and cultural groups deliver art and living culture activities around the city,” Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said.

“Zoe is well deserving of the Award and she has clearly put it to good use. I encourage everyone to check out her work at the Urban Cow Studio,” he said.

Zoe’s exhibition of glass objects explores the organic patterns and forms found in microscopic nature. She uses the distortive and reflective qualities of thick blown glass to illustrate the patterns of microscopic symmetry reflected on a suspended bubble.

“I like to explore the way glass is able to bend light, to stretch, reflect or distort an image,” said Zoe.

“I am also interested in patterns that occur in microscopic nature, and the feeling of wonder that we experience when looking through a microscope lens. I hope to translate that feeling of discovery through my work,” she said.

Zoe completed her Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours, First Class) at the University of SA this year. She has taken part in the national exhibition Hatched, received at Australia Council ArtStart grant and was winner of the 2012 Waterhouse Youth Arts Prize at the Museum of SA. Her work is included in the National Glass Collection at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery in New South Wales.
