City of Adelaide’s New Year’s Eve fireworks not going ahead

Lord Mayor of Adelaide Sandy Verschoor said that the unpredictable nature of COVID-19 and concerns around the potential for large gatherings of people mean that the risks of going ahead were too high.

Based on the latest advice in relation to COVID-19, the City of Adelaide has made the decision not to proceed with the midnight New Year’s Eve fireworks and lighting show across the city as planned.

Prior to this week’s COVID-19 announcements and restrictions being implemented, SA Health released a statement based on the most up to date COVID-19 advice at the time relating to fireworks.

This statement included the parameters event organisers would need to work within. Fireworks may lead to people gathering at various locations distant from the event to get a good vantage point, such as the Adelaide Hills. These gatherings would be beyond the control of the event organiser and not subject to COVID-19 management measures.

Lord Mayor of Adelaide Sandy Verschoor said that the unpredictable nature of COVID-19 and concerns around the potential for large gatherings of people mean that the risks of going ahead were too high.

“Our first priority is to keep our community safe and to act on the most up to date advice provided by SA Health and other key agencies in relation to COVID-19,” said the Lord Mayor.

“While it’s hard to predict what restrictions may be in place by December, it is expected that restrictions around social distancing and maximum square metre capacities will still be in place in late December 2020.

“Our focus will remain on communicating with and supporting city and North Adelaide hospitality businesses on New Year’s Eve. We are still planning to support businesses with live music in venues and business promotion where a business has a New Year’s Eve function or package.

“The city will still be a great place to welcome in the new year. After such a difficult year, I’m sure we’re all looking forward to an end-of-year celebration.”
