City to Unite for Earth Hour 2011

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood is calling on local businesses and residents to participate in Earth Hour by switching off all non-essential lights this Saturday March 26 between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.

“Come on Adelaide – let’s really get behind this and join millions around the world by turning off our lights for Earth Hour,” Stephen said.

“Together we can send a united message that we care about the planet and want to make a difference to our environment.”

Originating in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has grown into the world’s largest community-driven campaign for a sustainable planet, with over 4,000 cities in over 128 countries now taking part.

Adelaide City Council has signed up for the event and will be turning off non-essential lighting in most Council buildings and icons, including Victoria Square fountain, Elder Park fountain and parts of the Adelaide Town Hall.

The Rundle Lantern, located on the corner of Rundle and Pulteney Street, will also display a clock counting down the minutes until Earth Hour and will then be switched off for the event.

The community is also encouraged to go beyond the hour and adopt a more sustainable lifestyle long term, such as turning off lights and appliances at the wall when not in use, switching to solar power and managing our water use. These measures will all contribute to achieving Council’s vision of an environmentally sustainable city.

People are advised to use common sense during Earth Hour such as keeping safety and security lighting on, especially in public spaces and be careful if using candles.
