Clare Rise Bakery 1895: boozy baked goods & a historical cottage

Located in a historical cottage from 1895, Clare Rise Bakery offers plenty of homemade pasties and pastries with a local twist.

Established in 2013, Clare Rise Bakery 1895 is a family-run business located in the beautiful Adelaide Hills region of Clare. The bakery’s name honours the historical cottage’s original builder and owner, Albert Baker. The plaque fixed to the building’s façade was used by Clare Rise in designing their logo. It reads ‘Bilt to Rise’ in typewriter font at the bottom, a subtle nod to the building’s original owner.

“A lot of people think we’ve made a spelling error,” says Amanda, “but we’ve just copied how Albert Baker spelt it.” She also highlights the S is also intentionally backwards.

Quirky signage and ties to history aside, Clare Rise Bakery offers plenty of homemade pasties and pastries with a local twist. Harry, baker at Clare Rise, is especially proud of his creation ‘Beerabatta’, an iconic double-carb duo between Clare Rise’s award-winning ciabatta bread and Pikes Brewery stout. Interested in more alcohol and baked-good combos? Clare Rise also offers a hearty Riesling chicken pie, in collaboration with neighbouring Eldredge Winery.

Local products inspire the creative creations at Clare Rise, as do seasonal fruits. On offer in the past, and which are sure to make a comeback, are quandong cheesecake and danishes. Harry also introduced me to the cruffin, a sweet and decadent danish pastry proofed and baked in muffin pans. Especially popular during Christmas, these cruffins contain sweet fillings such as lemon curd, and strawberry and dark chocolate.

Of course, Clare Rise also offers delicious staples like their award-wining ciabatta and sourdough bread which is always on offer. They use stone-ground flour from Pangkarra Pasta, another local Clare business, in their speciality bread recipes.

“Everything tastes real,” says Amanda, “I believe that is what draws patrons to Clare Rise, since everything is handmade with an emphasis on local ingredients.”

If you are planning to holiday, road-trip, or simply venture out on a day-trip to the Adelaide Hills regions, be sure to add Clare Rise Bakery 1895 to the itinerary.
