Clare Valley winery Koonowla to reopen their cellar door with new owners

The cellar door and event space will continue to stock both Koonowla wines and will stock their second label, Georges.

Ah, picturesque Clare Valley. The area has many beautiful wineries, and we’ve found the newest go-to: Koonowla.

Located in Auburn, Koonowla has long stretches of lawn, multiple heritage buildings, and a range of different wines.

The winery, recently purchased by father and son team Alex and Nick George, will reopen around May with a cellar door and revamped facilities.

“Our cellar door and all the property’s historic structures will be reopening in the coming months,” they say.

The winery is hoping to become a popular event space for parties and weddings. It’s also the perfect place to have a quiet glass of wine overlooking the beautiful scenery.

Alex says he’s excited to reopen the venue and its heritage buildings and give them a new lease on life.

“We took the property over about a year and a half ago, and as I understand it, it had only really been used for private events,” he says.

Now, the pair hopes the grounds can be known not only for their beauty, but also their two wine labels. The cellar door and event space will continue to stock both Koonowla wines and will stock their second label, Georges.

Koonowla is more your traditional style of wines, with their shiraz being a favourite. Georges, on the other hand, is a little more experimental and appeals to the younger crowd.

They still plan to continue as an event space, though, offering a range of options to utilise the property’s unique buildings.

“There’s two spaces about to be licensed; One is a historic winery we are thinking about leaving mostly for events, and the other cellar door is more like a picnic cellar door where people can bring a rug and enjoy a glass of wine amongst the vineyards,” Alex says.

An opening date isn’t quite set in stone, but Alex says they are hoping to launch their event space with a event in the Clare Valley Gourmet in May, so be sure to keep an eye out.
