A long-term strategic vineyard selection program and a commitment to always be different, has paid off for Glen and Judy Kelly. Today their Clare Valley winery ArtWine takes home Winestate Magazine’s prestigious Category Wine of the Year Award for their 2011 Pinot Grigio.
Out of 11,000 wines that were tasted, ArtWine was the only Australian wine in their category, with four of the five finalists from New Zealand.
Renowned for their artistic approach and for creating wines from alternative and exotic grape varieties, ArtWine’s owners Glen and Judy Kelly are delighted with their win.
“Our passion has always been to make high quality, stylish and exclusive wines, and combine that with our love of art, wine and food,” Judy explains.
Being artistic, Judy has always liked to stretch the envelope. It was this notion coupled with Glen’s foresight of planting alternative varieties ten years ago that led to the creation of ArtWine.
“We have always appreciated the food friendly European wine varieties, and realised that there was a great opportunity in the Australian market to introduce consumers to alternative varieties.
“The Mediterranean climate in the Clare Valley provides optimal growing conditions for Pinot Grigio and our other alternatives. After Glen taking a risk years ago, we’re thrilled to be rewarded for our efforts,” says Judy.
Recent reports indicate Pinot Grigio is the fastest growing wine variety in Australia – from less than 1000 tonnes in the mid 2000’s to 43,000 tonnes in 2010.
The winning wine is crisp and dry, refreshing on the palate and easy to drink alone or partner with food – the perfect “verandah” wine for our Australian lifestyle and climate.
Other wines produced currently available through ArtWine include Tempranillo, Graciano, Tres Amigos, Viognier and Riesling with the 2012 vintage seeing their first Fiano.
“We are both thrilled to have had Joanne Irvine, award winning winemaker craft this year’s vintage and to be working with her for all future vintages,” says Judy.
ArtWine has no intention of slowing down. The couple is about to build an Adelaide Hills Cellar Door in Bird in Hand Road, Woodside and open ArtWine House, Clare Valley, a luxury bed and breakfast in the coming months.
