South Australia’s Cleland Wildlife Park has just opened the doors to its brand-new $2.57 million Koala Loft, a purpose-built sanctuary designed to give its resident koalas the ultimate new home.
Designed with comfort, care, and flexibility in mind, the new habitat offers visitors more opportunities than ever to get up close and personal with these cuddly marsupials.
The project has created a carefully considered new space that reflects the natural behaviours and needs of the koalas. The design features everything from sunny basking platforms for lazy afternoon lounging to shady hideaways and a fully air-conditioned indoor area.
“The new facility really enhances the care of our koalas and has dramatically improved our visitor experience,” shared the park’s General Manager, Kelly.
“We’re really pleased to see the koalas exploring, they’ve settled into their new home absolutely superbly. I think they’re pretty happy with it, and so are we!”
While the new facility is great news for the koalas, it also means visitors can now enjoy an expanded range of experiences. Whether you’re braving the elements or escaping the heat, the Koala Loft makes sure there’s always an opportunity to meet the koalas.
The Koala Loft is also a spot for people to learn about these native animals. When visiting the park, there’s now a great setup to find out more about the conservation needs and the vital role Cleland plays in protecting them. This is thanks to the hands-on experiences and engaging talks run by the keepers.
“We really want our visitors to walk away with a deeper understanding of our wildlife.”
For those eager to make the most of their visit, Cleland offers a variety of experiences, including the popular Meet a Koala encounter. This one-on-one session lets you get close to a koala and chat with its keeper about the animal’s habits, quirks, and the challenges facing koalas in the wild.
Every day at 12:15pm, the team opens the gates for the Behind the Scenes Koala Experience, which offers exclusive access to the koalas’ enclosure and a firsthand look at what goes into caring for these iconic Aussie animals.
Most importantly, heading down to the park gives you a chance to hear about the conservation efforts going on behind the scenes.
