Climate change continues to pose one of the greatest threats to the environment and humanity, and now, more than ever, we need to be aware of the causes and effects of global warming to prepare ourselves for the future.
Since 2005, a group of Adelaide Hills locals has been promoting sustainable living, sharing knowledge and building community roots at the annual Uraidla Sustainability Fair, which is returning to the Uraidla Showgrounds on March 16th for its 20th year. The fair is designed with one goal in mind: bringing sustainability issues to the forefront by encouraging sustainable practices and celebrating the environment.

This year’s program includes a panel discussion called “Preparing for an extreme climate: Hope and Action” featuring Director of the Environment Institute at the University of Adelaide Professor Andrew Lowe, author, public speaker, TV and radio presenter Sophie Thomson, climate and energy activist Paul Hill, and passionate Year 12 student Nigella Tarr.
From water storage and decarbonising your energy usage to tree planting and vegetable gardens, the panel will discuss a range of sustainable practices and paint a picture of greener, wilder backyards and communities that are productive, liveable, and sustainable.
Not only is the Fair an educational opportunity, but it also plays host to a vibrant marketplace of food and drink stalls, local makers and creatives, sustainable fashion, and a stellar lineup of not-for-profits and community groups.

For the foodies, Bonnie’s Vegan Van will be dishing up a 100% plant-based menu of handmade Asian food, Oranaise will be bringing the flavours of authentic paella with vegan options, and Let Them Eat will be serving their specialised vegetarian & vegan food.
Fair-goers can also expect a lineup of live music performers on the main stage throughout the day as well as a selection of sustainability talks at the five Tree-Talk locations from 10:15am – 12:15pm.
A selection of electric vehicle and E-bike designers will also be showcasing their products and speaking about the benefits of switching to electronic transportation. In fact, if you want to really experience the thrills of E-biking you can ride one from Norwood to Uraidla in the Charge Up The Hill event on the day of the fair.
So, if you’re interested in learning more about sustainability and environmentally-friendly practices, or just want to kick back in the sun and browse some market stalls, be sure to check out the Uraidla Sustainability Fair on Sunday, March 16th at the Uraidla Showgrounds.
