“Food, glorious food! We’re anxious to try it! Three banquets a day—our favourite diet!”
The cast from Oliver! aptly described the marvellous sensation that is food, and we here at Glam Adelaide are always down to sample the many flavours and various cuisines that are on offer here in Adelaide. Coal Cellar & Grill have once again provided mouth-watering meals to some very happy customers. Their July winter special, Beef & Blends, features three main courses ranging between $17 and $75, catering to every budget.
Friday night’s meal consisted of a generous beef shank for two (sourced locally from Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills), with braised vegetables, tallow cooked potatoes, and red wine jus. They also had green beans wrapped in bacon strips. Talk about a feast!
You know that feeling you get when you’re served up some super tender meat and it’s been cooked so perfectly that it just falls straight off the bone? That rush of excitement and the overwhelming certainty that damn, this is going to be a good meal. Well, that’s what it was like when the friendly waitress carried out this dish and we first started to cut the meat away.
Pair that with one of their recommended red wines localled sourced from South Australian vineyards and you’ve got a feast for the stomach and heart.
Their suggested wines all go beautifully with the beef shank—a fruity and light 2017 Grenache from the Barossa Valley, a bold and slightly sweet 2013 Merlot from the Adelaide Hills, or a heavy and peppery 2014 Cabernet from the Barossa Valley. Whatever your drink of choice, it will be the perfect combination to warm you up on these frosty winter evenings.
And it doesn’t stop there!
They have a whole page dedicated to dessert, so we opted for the “Bombe Alaska” and an apple and pear crumble. The Alaska consisted of strawberry and vanilla ice cream, chocolate sponge, desiccated coconut and torched meringue. They literally set the meringue on fire in front of you! It’s spectacular and the whole thing just melts in your mouth. The apple crumble (with vanilla ice cream and rosemary shards) reminded me of one my grandmother used to make—delicious and homely. Both desserts are on their set menu, so you definitely won’t miss out if you can’t make it there before the end of the month. Prices range between $15 to $22.
Look out for next month’s special, Venison & Vale. If it’s anything like the beef shank that myself and my partner inhaled, then I can guarantee it’ll blow your socks off!
“Oh, food! Wonderful food! Marvellous food! Glorious fooood!”
