On September 1st, thousands of keen trekkers will hit the trail along the stunning coastline of the Fleurieu Peninsula to raise funds for a worthy cause through the annual Coastrek event, but this year South Australia’s event will look a little different.
This year, hikers can choose to tackle the full 35km trail starting from Parsons Beach at 9:30am or take the shorter (but still solid) 20km walk which begins at 2:30pm where you’ll witness the full magic of the sky as it transitions from day to night over the course of your journey.
Both options finish in the gorgeous seaside town of Port Elliot and offer water and snack stops along the way.
And while a day of fitness and friends down south is a big enough drawcard itself, Coastrek is first and foremost a fundraising event, helping raise money and awareness around some of the biggest issues facing women in our society.
For 2023, Coastrek has partnered with the Australian Heart Foundation to shine a light on women’s and First Nations People’s heart health.
Coastrek Founder & CEO, Di Westaway OAM, said its more important than ever to get people moving: “The World Health Organisation has just given a dire warning that if we don’t increase our levels of physical activity, up to 500 million people will develop heart disease, obesity, diabetes and other chronic diseases by 2030.
“We need to support people to make movement an enjoyable part of their daily lives and find fun ways to get active, like hiking with friends. Our lives literally depend on it.”
The Fleurieu Peninsula has been carefully selected by Coastrek organisers due to its unique landscape and spectacular scenery and continues to be a feature on the lineup every year.
So, how does it work? The 20km or 35km walk is tackled in teams of four, with each team banding together to raise money to support the Heart Foundation. If you’d like to join but don’t have enough to make up a full team, no worries! Just checkout the team vacancies page on the website.
Once you’re registered you’ll receive a customised Coastrek training program to get you fit and ready which includes tips to plan, prep and prepare as well as support to help you on your fundraising journey and access to the exclusive Facebook group.
Grab your mates and start hitting the pavement to get involved in what is always a great day out!
