As South Australia braces for a prolonged period of cold weather, the state government has activated a Code Blue extreme weather response, effective from 5pm today (Monday May 19th) until 9am Wednesday, May 21st. This emergency protocol comes in response to the anticipated with very low overnight temperatures in several regions across the state. Areas affected include Clare Valley, Riverland and Mt Lofty Ranges.

The Code Blue coincides with the Bureau of Meteorology’s Frost Warning for the Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands, Upper South East and Lower South East forecast districts. Temperatures at ground level can be many degrees lower than those recorded by standard weather stations, especially in calm conditions with clear skies.
Severe frosts with temperatures down to -3 degrees, which can cause significant crop damage, are forecast for Tuesday morning in parts of the Riverland, Murraylands, Upper South East and Lower South East forecast districts.
Frosts with temperatures down to -2 degrees are forecast for Tuesday morning in parts of the Mid North forecast district.
The Code Blue response aims to provide essential support and protection for individuals experiencing homelessness during this extreme weather period. Special measures include the provision of emergency accommodation to ensure that those sleeping rough can find refuge from the severe cold.
Individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness are urged to contact Homeless Connect SA. This critical service is available by calling 1800 003 308 at any time of the day. Homeless Connect SA operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, offering support and immediate assistance throughout the year.
Minister for Human Services, Nat Cook, shared, “These Code Blue responses help people experiencing homelessness who are most affected by extreme winter weather to remain warm and safe.”

Community members are encouraged to act as advocates for those who may not easily seek help themselves, extending a lifeline to those in need during these freezing conditions.
