Code Blue extended as cold weather continues across SA

The extended support aims to reduce harm to vulnerable members of the community and encourage people to access services.

The Code Blue TIER 2 emergency response for people sleeping rough in the Riverland and Upper South East has been extended as the region continues to experience cold overnight conditions. The extended support aims to reduce harm to vulnerable members of the community and encourage people to access services.

The alert was activated at 5pm on Tuesday 10 June and will be continued until 11am 13 June. The decision follows a forecast of persistently low overnight temperatures that present an increased risk to those without safe or secure shelter.

During a TIER 2 response, additional support measures are introduced to help those sleeping rough or experiencing homelessness. These include the distribution of hot drinks and meals, bedding, blankets, sleeping bags, and warm clothing.

Maps showing locations of heated public spaces are also made available to help individuals seek temporary warmth and safety. Emergency services contact lists are provided to those in need, ensuring people are aware of where to access help quickly. Daytime services will remain open for longer hours, with extra staff deployed to assist during this period.

Homeless Connect SA continues to be the central contact point for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The service can provide referrals, information, and access to accommodation and emergency relief.

Residents and community organisations are encouraged to check in on anyone they believe may be affected by the cold weather. The continuation of the Code Blue alert highlights the importance of community response during periods of increased risk.
