Cold snap prompts warnings as SA shivers through the third week of Winter

Warnings issued as wet, cold weather lashes South Australia. RSPCA urges people to take pets inside.

Icy weather across South Australia has prompted weather warnings for the rest of the working weak, with forecast temperatures below 10 degrees for the next four nights.

A Code Blue has been activated for those sleeping rough in Adelaide, the Riverland, Limestone Coast, Fleurieu Peninsula, Clare Valley and Kangaroo Island.

The Hutt Street Centre has extended its hours until 4.30pm Thursday and WestCare Centre in the City will open from 5pm Wednesday and Thursday, for overnight accommodation.

RSPCA South Australia has also put out a warning for animal owners ahead of the weather bureau’s forecast of temperatures

Conditions will be especially chilly in the hills, with both Stirling and Mount Barker forecast to drop to just 5 degrees tonight. Across most of SA, low temperatures are forecast to be accompanied by strong winds and rain.

RSPCA South Australia is urging pet owners to keep animals indoors wherever possible. This is especially important for small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs, whose body temperatures can drop dangerously low in cold weather.

If animals must remain outdoors, solid and warm shelter that is able to withstand rain, hail and wind is vital for the animal’s safety and comfort.

Extra bedding may be required and animals often require more food during the winter months as it takes more energy to regulate their body temperature in the cold.

Farm animals are also at risk in extreme cold weather, and sheep graziers in the Mount Lofty Ranges, Yorke Peninsula, parts of the Flinders, Mid North, Murraylands and Upper South East have been issued an alert, with the high risk of lamb and sheep losses exposed to the forecast conditions.
