Cafetal Coffee Co. has officially opened next to the Latin Market in Kent Town, and specialises in Colombian coffee.
Opened by Daniel Valencia and Julián González, the brains behind KOM Coffee in Unley and Plympton, Cafetal is also a roastery.
The organic premium coffee beans Cafetal use are sourced from the many different coffee regions in Colombia, famous for their smooth texture and rich flavour.
All of the coffee that Cafetal serves is single-origin, as they believe the ten varietals on offer are too good to blend with each other.
Roasting the beans in-house means the team have total control over the whole process.
“We profile the coffee, and then roast it perfectly. We want to bring the flavours of the coffee alive, it’s our specialty,” says Daniel.
Cafetal import all their beans directly from the source, and have created a personal and strong connection with the farmers.
“We buy beans directly from the farmers, negotiate with them what’s good, and we are able to find out what works and what doesn’t in the Australian market,” he continues.
Daniel tells us that a lot of the coffee that Adelaide sees comes through Sydney and Melbourne, whereas Cafetal ship theirs directly from the source.
The most popular coffee varietal at the café has been the Santander from a Casablanca farm. The single-origin roast is rich in flavour, mainly due to the high altitude and pristine growing region it comes from.
From the espresso machine to cold drip, and even a French press, the Cafetal team has tested their coffee beans to find the best way to extract the flavour.
If you’re feeling peckish while you’re visiting, there are a few South American snacks for you to sink your teeth into. Highlights include guava tarts and empanadas.
Cafetal Coffee Co. is open Monday to Friday 6am ’til 3pm and Saturday 8am ’til 2pm.
