It’s a JazzFlip! – Six of Adelaide’s Best Original Music Acts Take On Each Other’s Tunes at the 2014 Adelaide Fringe

Take a seat ring-side at The Wheatsheaf Hotel during the Adelaide Fringe as COMA (Creative Original Music Adelaide) brings back its popular JazzFlip! series – three ‘one-off’ shows (February 17 & 24, March 3) – each featuring two of Adelaide’s premier original music acts performing the other’s compositions.

After a successful debut at the 2013 Adelaide Fringe, COMA has moved JazzFlip! up to the heavyweight division in 2014.

“Last year we had three pairs of individual artists taking on each other’s original tunes – but we’ve expanded the program for the 2014 Fringe, to really showcase the diversity of Adelaide’s creative original music scene,” says Emily Tulloch – chair of the COMA committee & member of SA’s own Zephyr Quartet. “Along with two of Adelaide’s finest experimental jazz guitarists going head to head, we also have four local ensembles reinterpreting each other’s music.”

The first musical match-up takes place Monday February 17 – with Zephyr Quartet and post-jazz rockers 1.1 Immermann tackling each other’s tunes. Zephyr Quartet is a contemporary classical string ensemble known for its exploration of diverse music and pushing the boundaries of art music. Instrumental outfit 1.1 Immermann produce lush, energetic jazz-related post rock and will perform at JazzFlip! as a quintet.

On February 24, the music of left-handed guitarist Dylan Marshall will be reinterpreted by right-handed guitarist James Brown – and vice versa! A guitarist, composer (and sometimes bassist) – James writes and performs with some of Adelaide’s leading jazz, rock and experimental acts. Dylan has produced and recorded numerous albums across many genres over the last ten years and currently works with various acts including the Shaolin Afronauts and Transatlantics.

Then on March 3The New Cabal – led by Lyndon Gray – and Mike Stewart’s The Airbenders face each other for the final JazzFlip! bout. The New Cabal are Adelaide’s original modern jazz masters, while The Airbenders – formed in 2010 – are known for their hard-swinging, funky blend of Hammond organ-driven jazz and blues.

“What’s great about the JazzFlip! sessions is that they’re entertaining for everyone involved!” says Emily. “The artists get to hear their music as interpreted by other musicians – which can be a real eye-opener – and the energy created through each musical exchange makes for an incredibly engaging concert experience for the audience.”
