On the corner of Hindmarsh Square and Grenfell Street sits The Griffins Hotel which has existed since 1850, and it’s about to get a huge shake-up.
Not only will the pub be getting a new menu and be undergoing steady renovations in the coming months, it will soon also be home to a new restaurant in May: Acre 99.
The idea stems from Adam Vonthethoff who took over ownership of The Griffins Hotel last week.
“We feel like the hotel has really good bones but it has previously been underperforming. We think it’s such an iconic hotel in a great location and we see how much potential it has,” Adam says.
Acre 99 will be led by The Griffins executive chef Luke Brabin who has worked with celebrated chefs like Cheong Liew and Gordon Ramsay and at well-known food locations such as The Hilton and The Botanical in South Yarra.
He’ll be creating a menu which will be much more refined than their pub offering and it will cover a broad range of dishes including a Mediterranean vibe and touches of Asia.
You’ll be able to enjoy delicious items such as Barossa Hampshire pork, Coorong mullet from down south, local squid, local king fish, dry aged strip sirloin, Spencer golf prawns and much more.
“It’s a more refined celebration of everything I like to eat. I don’t like to mess with it too much, it’s all about the quality produce,” Brabin says.
The new restaurant will be located inside of the Griffins Hotel which will also be launching a new pub menu next week as a part of its face-lift updates which they have already started.
“The Griff’s used to be Adelaide’s best bar, but it seems to have skipped a generation. We’re going to turn that around. I left one of the best jobs in Adelaide to do this,” he says.
Adam was chief operating officer of Adelaide Oval for 12 years and has also worked at Sky City Casino and the Stamford Grand, so he has exceptionally high standards.
He’ll be working on changing up the pubs offering and potentially collaborating with the local council and other businesses to get activations happening back in Hindmarsh Square.
The Griffins plans on doing BBQ lunches on the veranda on Tuesdays, cheeky cocktail days in the square on Wednesdays, half price oysters and Alpha Box and Dice on Thursdays, charcuterie boards and acoustic and DJ music until late on Fridays, delightful outdoor offerings on Saturday and bottomless Mimosa’s on Sunday.
Adam’s hope is that all of the new upgrades, including the new Acre 99 restaurant, will make the Griffins a place people will want to meet again.
