If you like the sound of tender, flavoursome cuts of meat, marinated and cooked to perfection over coal then I dare say you’ll like the sound of the CBD’s newest restaurant.

Set to open late July, Chunky Obba Gogi is offering a unique take on the popular cuisine that is Korean BBQ and with one look at the menu, you’ll be booking a table before you can say Bulgogi.

The brainchild of an international student from China, Regina moved to Australia in 2014 and it was when her partner Sangmin made the move during the pandemic, they decided to follow their dream and open a restaurant with Sangmin serving as the main man in the kitchen as head chef.

Meat is the obvious star of the show here with varying cuts of beef and pork to choose from ready and waiting to be grilled, by you, in true Korean BBQ style. But it’s the special marinades that set Chunky Obba Gogi apart.

“We use the sauces to create different tastes,” says co-owner Regina Wang. “Particularly on the wagyu beef ribs, the marinade makes it almost sweet.”

And while Korean BBQ is typically based on and around charred meats, there is one dish on the menu that is pescatarian-friendly and requires zero cooking. Korean sashimi.

“No one else in Adelaide is doing this,” says Regina. “It’s a special Korean dish that is very popular in Asia but we haven’t been able to find it anywhere in Adelaide yet, so we thought we’d make our own!”

Korean sashimi sees a specially made sauce marinate delicate pieces of crab or shrimp that are then eaten raw – as traditional sashimi is.

“Of course, you can cook it if you like, but it really is best fresh and uncooked,” explains Regina.

A delicious range of side dishes is available, that is just as important in their own right playing the supportive role to the main star. Kimchi, bean sprouts, mushrooms of every variety and of course rice sit waiting to be paired with your carnivorous culinary creation.

As those who are accustomed to a Korean BBQ or two know, the eating part is only half the fun. Designed for sharing, Korean BBQ can be a world of excitement as the raw meat comes out ready for you and your table to show of your grill skills.

It’s the perfect arrangement for larger groups of people and particularly benefits the indecisive among us who want everything and nothing at the same time. It’s this that makes Korean BBQ more than just a meal but entertainment at the same time. Amidst the smoke-hazed room, it’s not uncommon to lose track of what it is you have ordered, but it’s all part of the fun.

Chunky Obba Gogi is set to open in late July. Keep track on the opening date by following along on Instagram.
