The once dark and gritty western strip of Hindley Street has seen a revitalisation in recent years, with new venues such as luxury bar and restaurant, Stem, bringing life and gourmet food to the area. The newest venue to join the growing social hub in Hindley Street’s west is Nearly – a wine bar showcasing local wine selections and charcuterie nibbles.
Stem co-owners Tom Paxton and Lachlan Farmer, alongside Udaberri bartender Alex Glastonbury, are behind the new venture, alongside Illustrator Cécile Gariépy and Designer Stephen Roy.
The 45-seat wine bar, located right next door to Jive, will take over the old Vaporama store. The vape shop will be transformed into a cosy meeting place for anyone looking to enjoy great wine, cocktails, traditional spritzes, alongside bar snacks like cured meats, cheese, and pickles.
Designer Stephen Roy is leading the charge with the fit out, with an autumnal colour palette and Venetian plaster making a sneaky appearance on the Nearly Instagram page. An 18-seat communal table will take centre stage, as well as a curved, room-length timber bar. A new mural will also take shape on the walls, contrasting with the original chequerboard floors.
Finding a home next to some of Adelaide’s best live music venues, like Jive and Lion Arts Factory, Nearly will fill the wine bar-shaped hole in the west Hindley Street scene. Set to have 7-8 outdoor tables, Nearly will be a wonderful pre- or post-gig drinks spot in the summer months.
Bartender Alex Glastonbury says the wine list will be “small but rotated regularly”, presenting Australian wine brands to guests such as Adelaide Hills’ brands, Ochota Barrels and Gentle Folk.
Nearly is the latest venue to open on Hindley Street’s west end, joining the lavish Rockford Hotel, West Oak hotel and brunch spot Peter Rabbit, just to name a few.
Nearly is set to open in late November / early December at 179 Hindley Street.
