COMING SOON: Lowrider Barbershop owner plans new pizza bar ‘Big Bite Pizza’ amid vandal setbacks

After overcoming setbacks with his barbershop and cafe, Matt Hill is launching Big Bite Pizza, combining his passion for food with the support of his loyal community.

Matt Hill’s entrepreneurial journey has been anything but ordinary. From starting out with a barbershop to navigating the challenges of running a cafe-barbershop combo, Matt is now shifting gears to pursue his dream of opening a pizza shop.

“Lowrider started just as a barber shop six years ago, and then I moved locations a couple of times from a shipping container to Port Noarlunga where my shop got burnt down three days after being open,” said owner Matt Hill.

“It was a random attack and never found out who did it. I was pretty disheartened after all that and wasn’t sure if I was going to open another store, because I didn’t know if it was going to happen again. Eventually, I moved to Old Reynella and started just doing coffee and stuff like that in the barbershop, but I really got a passion for it.

“I was there for four years and wanted to expand, it was a high-risk high-reward situation, but I really wanted to see growth.”

From there Matt moved to Morphett Vale, where he set up Lowrider in a huge 200sqm venue, with space to combine his passions. This is what kicked off the cafe and barbershop combo that was in action at Lowrider over the past few years.

“We saw success with the cafe and barbershop, but after separating from my partner in October it’s been tougher.

“It’s been going downhill, customers were dropping off and with the cost of wages and food, the cafe was sucking all the money from the barbershop. Eventually, in December I thought we had to close this, otherwise we were going to lose it all.”

After spending some time to think and reset, Matt decided it was time to try something new, but this hasn’t been without struggles along the way.

“I love food, that’s my passion, ever since I was little I’ve wanted to open a pizza shop.

“Clients and customers from the barbershop who are in trades have all been chipping in to help me and it’s just been amazing, I couldn’t do it without them.”

The new pizza shop, called Big Bite Pizza, was attacked by vandals this week, who threw rocks smashing the windows, leaving him with thousands of dollars in damage. Despite this, Matt is persevering and determined that the shop will be a success.

“People were smashing up my shop and now before the insurance money comes in I’ve got to fork out the $2000 to repair the windows. But I feel confident I’ll succeed.”

Big Bite Pizza will specialise in classic 12-inch pizzas and square Sicilian pizzas.

“Our sauce is going to be really special, slow-cooked homemade by me that’s perfect and consistent every time. We’ve got heaps of flavours like a satay pizza, a Thai green curry pizza, on sourdough bases, they’re going to be absolutely delicious.”

Big Bite Pizza is set to throw a grand opening on February 8th, where the community is invited to get down, try the pizzas and enjoy some pretty epic entertainment.

“We are planning the grand opening for the 8th of February, we’re going to organise a car show as well, maybe even with a BMX demo. We’re just waiting for approval.”

With a loyal customer base and a community-driven launch, Matt is confident that Big Bite Pizza will be his most successful venture yet. Set to open in February, the grand opening is sure to be an exciting celebration of food, cars, and fun, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Matt and his supporters.

“Everything I do I put 150% into it, and I go in head first, I’m confident this is going to be the one. We have a lot of community behind us, we’re so excited.”
