Popular spice house Gewürzhaus is set to ‘spice’ things up with its second SA store opening in Hahndorf this November. This new location follows the success of their first shop, which opened in the Adelaide Central Market in 2020.
Gewürzhaus, pronounced “Ge-voorts-house” and meaning “Spice House” in German, is well-known around the country for its huge selection of high-quality spices, herbs, and specialty food products. Founded with the mission to inspire creativity in the kitchen, Gewürzhaus’ spices are sourced from around the globe, including rare and unique blends.
With over 350 specialty spices, herbs, salts, peppers, teas, and sugars, Gewürzhaus provides endless inspiration through recipes and tips found on each jar. The store has more than 250 single-origin ingredients and over 100 exclusive small-batch blends.
Since starting in 2010, Gewürzhaus has opened 13 self-scoop stores across Australia in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, and of course, Adelaide. In addition to their retail stores, Gewürzhaus regularly hosts cooking classes, workshops, and events to educate customers about the different uses of spices and how to work them into everyday meals.
Gewürzhaus’s mission is simple: “We exist to inspire and nurture cooking at home. Bringing you a wide range of high-quality ingredients to inspire you to create new recipes and traditions to cherish for generations to come.”
Co-founders Maria, Eva, and their mother, Gabi, say that “cooking from the home and the heart” is key to their brand. Their journey began with their great-grandmother, Oma Rosa, a baker, and Oma Liesel, who encouraged their passion for cooking. In 2010, they opened the first Gewürzhaus store on Lygon Street in Carlton, Victoria, celebrating their European heritage.
Some of Gewürzhaus’s best-selling spices include a Butter Chicken Blend, Spaghetti Alla Bolognese, Garlic Lovers’ Spice and Feel Good Hot Chocolate, among many others. They also provide heaps of recipes on their website to help customers make the most of their spices.
