COMING SOON: SHMOCHI by Shibui – Adelaide’s new hot mochi donut shop

The terrific trio behind Adelaide’s iconic Shibui Dessert Bar are about to launch ‘Shmochi by Shibui’ – a brand-new hot mochi dessert bar coming soon to St Peter’s.

Holey moley, our mochi donut dreams are coming true. The terrific trio behind Adelaide’s iconic Shibui Dessert Bar are about to launch ‘Shmochi by Shibui’ – a brand-new hot mochi donut dessert bar coming soon to St Peter’s.

Owners Lisa Chao, Thy Nguyen, and Quang Nguyen have spent over a year searching for the perfect location to bring their Shmochi vision to life. After six years of wowing Adelaide at their Shibui dessert shop on Grote Street and countless festival pop-ups in their iconic bubblegum pink shipping container, the trio is putting the finishing touches on their new permanent suburban venue.

“Shibui customers have been asking us for years for a place to enjoy the same wonderful desserts they are seeing at festivals around Adelaide, and now we are delivering,” Owner Lisa Chao says.

At the heart of Shmochi will be their signature mochi doughnut – (that’s Shibui x mochi magic). These gluten-free, vegetarian treats are the very thing that put Shibui on the map, made from a secret recipe known only to the three founders.

Mochi donuts have taken over Instagram and TikTok, but they’re still a rare gem in Adelaide, one that many people travel to Japan for. Now, you can get your hands on one (or three) anytime you want. Chef Quang Nguyen takes pride in making everything from scratch right on-site.

The menu will also feature a mix of scooped ice cream and soft serve, and fun twists on viral dessert trends. From nostalgic Asian-Australian flavours to creative new takes on fan favourites, Shmochi is going to have it all.

The Shmochi venue is designed to be a bright, fun space perfect for hanging out with friends, family, or even treating yourself to a little me-time with plenty of parking and easy access.

“Shmochi represents the future for us: a place where we can bring the best of what we’ve built and share it with the community in a new and exciting way,” Owner Thy Nguyen said.

“After having a family of my own, we all wanted to ensure the venue was approachable and accessible to families so that we could combine our two loves, family and mochi together and share them with the community.”

If you can’t wait for the grand opening, keep an eye out for the iconic Shibui mochi donut at various Adelaide events this year. The Adelaide Fringe is most likely the next big one! In the meantime, be sure to follow their Instagram for all the sweet, juicy updates.
