From the makers of The Sellar Door café in Brighton comes a refined and specialty café called The Local Canteen – a new Henley Beach coffee shop that’s been in the works behind the scenes for some time, with big plans of new tastes and flavoursome coffee.
A tease of first look Instagram posts have been shared, with small glimpes of the gorgeous and minimalistic space due to open in the beachside suburb early November.
The team have been keeping the new venue all pretty hush hush, dropping ambiguous hints of what’s to come in the Main Street store by plastering its facade with olive green posters with the new name and QR code to build anticipation.

Owners Tom and Ben Rodger, have made a welcoming room full of locally sourced ingredients open from morning til night with all your brekky favourites to start the day before winding down with wine, spirits and gourmet cheeses in the evening.
The Local Canteen’s sister venue, The Sellar Door, located on Jetty Road in Brighton, is a lush café that incorporates a market bazaar and hosts workshops and events for its beachside customers. Since 2016 the café has built up a family serving up breakfasts, takeaway wines and mugs with the best latte art that’s almost too good to sip.
The atmosphere gives a refreshing unique take on café offering takeaway wines, take home candles, plants with friendly faces and brightly coloured furnishings both indoor and outdoor amongst picnic tables shaded by pastel umbrellas.
Now taking a short leap to Henley Beach, The Local Canteen is focusing on quality coffee for the local masses by local owners. All the same scrumptious eats like their smoothie bowls, panini rolls, fresh juices and more.

Owner Tom Rodger spoke on how the idea came to be: “It had come to fruition during the covid period,” he says. “The demand for coffee – real quality coffee – during that time was a lot. We really learned what our customers wanted.”
Henley locals themselves, Tom and Ben are proud they’ve finally created a spot on the beachside for catch ups and predominantly takeaway coffee.
“It’s definitely more on the go with 12-ish seats inside and outside seating as well. Henley Square is developing as well so there will be new grassed areas and shading for the community and their toasties.”
The Local Cafe will be the go to coffee shop for the community and they’re looking forward to meeting everyone face to face and creating a space for people to catch up and take their specialty drinks to the beach.
The Local Canteen is due to open early November at 32 Main Street, Henley Beach.
