If you’re a sweet tooth, but can’t always justify the heavy sugar hit, this new Torrensville cake and coffee shop is right up your alley.
The venue, Lumu Cake & Coffee, is bringing a fresh, dreamy fit out for a softer style of sweet treat with airy Asian-style chiffon cakes, fresh dairy cream and coffee, all wrapped up in a warm cafe space.
Rather than a rich, heavy, thick cake layered with buttercream and fondant, Lumu cakes centre around less sweetness, minimal artificial additives and the freshest dairy cream.
Behind Lumu is Agnes, a cake decorator who has long dreamed of opening her own cake shop. After completing her master’s degree in Brisbane, she and her partner made the move back to Adelaide, where she was living before relocating for university.
“Our philosophy is that enjoying desserts shouldn’t mean compromising on quality or health,” Agnes said. “That’s one of the key differences that sets us apart from many other cake shops.”
Lumo holds a strong emphasis on natural flavour and balance, Agnes told us.
“We use fresh dairy cream so that you don’t have to worry about trans fats, even though it is more costly and harder to work with, we believe it’s a better and more honest choice for our customers.”
Agnes says there’s nothing quite like it in Adelaide. She frequents cake and coffee shops on her day’s off, exploring different venues across Adelaide.
“If you’re having other cakes, like Western-style mud cake or carrot cake, they can feel a little bit heavy,” she said. “That’s why we don’t want that kind of cream.”

The venue itself brings wabi-sabi inspired designs, which is a Japanese aesthetic that finds beauty in naturally imperfect objects. The space will embrace warm, earthy tones to flow with the tranquil feeling the wabi-sabi vibe aims to give off.
The vision is to have the smell of freshly baked cakes and brewed coffee wash over and into your senses as you step through the door.
If the pictures of the boutique cakes don’t speak for themselves, then we will. It’s clear Agnes spends time and energy putting effort into making her offering high quality not just visually, but hopefully on the taste buds too.
There won’t be any boring flavours, with previous creations of Agnes’ featuring white grape yogurt, caramel chocolate banana, black forest, mango yogurt and Osmanthus Oolong peach.

The drinks will be lead by Agnes’ partner Jonathan, who has a massive love for creating coffee and experimenting with new tastes.
“Our drink menu includes items such as matcha latte, hojicha latte, and other tea based creations that complement our cakes,” Agnes said.
The duo hope to have Lumu up and running by July and can’t wait to bring a new style of sweet treat to Adelaide.
