Yitpi Yartapuultiku, which translates to “Soul of Port Adelaide” in Kaurna language, is set to become a transformative project that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Led by Aboriginal custodians and the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, this initiative aims to revitalize a neglected plot of land and create a vibrant public park that offers immersive cultural learning experiences for the community.
Yitpi Yartapuultiku represents a ground-breaking collaboration, honoring the Aboriginal connection to Country and promoting shared design and decision-making. From the initial stages of development, the project has prioritized respect, collaboration, and deep listening to ensure the authentic representation of Aboriginal culture.
The City of Port Adelaide Enfield, alongside Ashley Halliday Architects, Wax Design, and the Yitpi Yartapuultiku Aboriginal Custodian Group, have worked together to seamlessly integrate cultural practices and narratives into every aspect of the design.
The project not only serves as a cultural center but also fosters a deep connection to the coastal and river environment. Yitpi Yartapuultiku supports the health of the river, habitats for wildlife, and water quality, preserving the natural beauty that holds significance to the Aboriginal community.
Once completed in early 2025, Yitpi Yartapuultiku will offer a diverse range of activities and experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds. The center will provide opportunities for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal individuals to engage in immersive cultural education experiences, guided tours, and dynamic programs led by knowledgeable Aboriginal custodians.
The indoor and outdoor spaces will be versatile, accommodating various cultural and community events, reinforcing a sense of inclusivity and providing a platform for connection and learning.
Mayor Claire Boan says “At its core, Yitpi Yartapuultiku aims to heal and bring the community together, while offering unparalleled opportunities for events, community programs, and tourism.”
