The best getaways are the ones that remove you from your everyday. Where you can completely disconnect from reality and enter into an alternate world where everyday life is nothing but a distant memory. Island Burrow provides just that.
Overlooking the ocean on the outskirts of Kangaroo Island’s township of Penneshaw, Island Burrow is the perfect retreat to help you completely escape. From the moment you arrive and are greeted by the large she-oak trees, a feeling of tranquillity will wash over you. And that’s just the beginning.
Owned by interior designer Samantha Bosward and her husband, the pair purchased the property a few years ago and have spent some time renovating and designing the space to create a place of rest and relaxation for their guests.
“The bare bones were there when we bought it, it just needed a spruce up,” explains Sam. “We added a new deck and kitchen and fully furnished the house to create the right vibe. We really wanted it to be different and unique so that it didn’t resemble anyone’s ‘home’ and instead felt like a holiday.”
This feeling is helped by the unique dome shape of the building and the cosy, quality interior design.
“We want it to feel like affordable luxury. We’re not a retreat but we wanted to lean into that sort of feel but more accessible.
“A lot of thought has been put into the furniture and other items used throughout the property, all of which are really high quality to ensure longevity.”
The addition of the kitchen was also important and a feature that Sam believed was an important one.
“Having a fully functioning kitchen was a key factor for us so guests could enjoy meals together and make the most of the Island’s great produce. We also love sitting down as a family around the table so it was important to us to have a nice dining area.”
The earthy tones that Sam has used throughout are a direct reflection of the natural elements of the grounds on which the property stands.
“The colours change in the trees throughout the year from vibrant green to golds and browns in autumn, so the colour palette of Island Burrow reflects that.
“A lot of properties on the island focus on the ocean and while you can see the ocean from the deck and it is beautiful, we wanted to celebrate some of the other natural elements of the island.”
Sitting 10 minutes from the beach and the town, the property offers a unique perspective of feeling a million miles away without being so.
Island Burrow is available to book all year round and can be done so here.
