A major boost in recreation and community infrastructure is set for Adelaide’s northern suburbs as construction begins on Stage 1 of the Riverlea District Sportsground. Designed to be one of the largest district-level sporting facilities in the region, the development will help to transform the area into a spot for all things sport, school programs, and community activity.
The project is a collaborative effort between Walker Corporation, the City of Playford and Catholic Education South Australia, forming part of a 15.35-hectare recreation and education precinct in the heart of Riverlea. Around three-quarters of the site, roughly the size of eight Adelaide Ovals, will be dedicated to community sporting facilities, which will also be shared with the future Xavier College Riverlea Park campus.

Backed by a $15.7 million allocation from the City of Playford, Stage 1 will bring a central multi-purpose oval for AFL, soccer, and cricket, a dedicated soccer pitch, cricket practice nets, lighting, fencing, landscaped spectator areas, off-street parking, and new pedestrian links connecting the neighbourhood to the precinct.
“Delivering major community and schools infrastructure early has been an integral part of Walker’s long-term vision for Riverlea,” shared Walker Managing Director and CEO David Gallant. “It’s exciting to see construction begin on a place where local sporting teams and schools will train and play on premium facilities, surrounded by open space where neighbours will have barbecues and birthday parties”

“As our city grows, so does our commitment to providing the social and sporting infrastructure that connects people and supports active, vibrant lifestyles,” added City of Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty. “This precinct will serve generations of Playford families, creating a central hub for local sport and community life, while demonstrating that Council is supporting planned and sustainable growth, with schools, sporting facilities and open space delivered alongside new housing.”
Future stages of the Riverlea District Sportsground project will expand the precinct to include additional playing fields, hard courts, and a shared clubroom and community facility, scaling up as the population grows. Construction of Stage 1 is expected to support up to 100 local jobs across civil works, landscaping, and specialist trades during 2026.
Xavier College Riverlea Park, located next to the sportsground, is also in the works, with the second and third floors currently under construction. With 260 enrolment applications already received for 2027, the school is on track to welcome its first students in December next year. Dr Neil McGoran, Executive Director of Catholic Education South Australia, said, “As the college prepares to welcome its first families, we are proud to be working alongside our partners to deliver high-quality facilities that support student learning, formation, wellbeing and connection.”

Stage 1 of the Riverlea District Sportsground is set to be fully functional by early 2027.
