The $40 million Jetty Road Glenelg Upgrade project has officially kicked off, with construction now underway in the City zone, stretching from Brighton Road to the Partridge/Gordon Streets intersection.

Construction will take place both day and night, allowing the Glenelg community to continue shopping, dining, and enjoying all the best stores with minimal disruption. To make the process as smooth as possible, the project is being divided into small, manageable stages.

While work continues, local businesses will remain open, and traffic management will be in place throughout the day. Some parking spots in front of the construction zones will be temporarily unavailable, but the majority will still be accessible.

The renewal works in the City zone, which started in November 2024, will include several exciting improvements. There will be a new entry statement at the Brighton Road corner, designed to create a welcoming arrival point for visitors.

The footpaths will be completely redone, with continuous paving that improves accessibility. Pedestrian safety will also be improved, with areas now compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act to offer safer paths for everyone.

The street’s existing amenities will also be revamped, keeping Jetty Road’s iconic charm, while making it more modern and functional.

This major project will be completed over three zones – City, Transition, and Coast – over three years. While construction is already underway in the City zone, designs for the Coast and Transition zones are being developed and will be released for community consultation early this year.

As well as the upgrades you can see, an important part of the work is focused on stormwater improvements, which were completed in late 2024. This upgrade involved removing tree roots from old pipes, relining them, and repairing cracks for better water drainage.

The goal is to reduce water pooling along the street and extend the lifespan of the stormwater system for another 100 years. The City Council invested $246,000 in these improvements, which will make the drainage system more efficient, reducing the risk of flooding in the roadway, car parks, and footpaths.

“We’re committed to enhancing the street’s infrastructure to ensure it continues to serve the community for many years to come,” Holdfast Bay Mayor Amanda Wilson said. “The project team has done an excellent job of completing this work with minimal disruption to the street’s function and access for businesses.”

The transformation of Jetty Road is officially underway, and we can’t wait to see the final result. Stay tuned as this iconic Adelaide street gets ready to shine even brighter!
